Focus Article 2011 - #1142 – Flammability Testing of Refrigerant Blend

Improving efficiency, lowering ozone depletion (ODP), lowering contribution to global warming (GWP) are the driving forces behind new chemicals and new formulations being brought to the market by the industry.

ASHRAE Standard 34 -2010 “Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants” specifies rigorous testing, modeling and data collection process to which any newly formulated blend brought to the market has to be subjected. The result of this process is assignment of the “R” number to the given blend, certifying that the safety classification of the blend was based on the required data.

Focus Article 2011 - #1131 – Explosives in Focus – Competent Authority Approval

In the UN system of classifying hazardous materials, there are references to a “Competent Authority”. While this term may have various meanings in other circles, in relation to hazardous materials transportation, this authority is the designated final word on UN Classification or International Shipping within each country. In the USA, the “Competent Authority” is the Associate Administrator for Hazardous Materials Safety. This is a senior leadership position within PHMSA (US DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration). The regulating applicable document is the most current version of 49 CFR parts 100-185.

OSHA Dust Explosion Inspection Preparatory Training – One-Day Training Course

The present National Emphasis Program of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (Directive No. CPL 03-00-008. March 11, 2008) is concerned with combustible dusts and was prompted by three disastrous explosions in 2003, including one explosion that involved aluminum dust. This NEP began on October 18, 2007, and required Federal OSHA offices to begin targeted inspections of sites that process, handle, or otherwise generate combustible dusts. State plan participation in the program was strongly encouraged but not required. Nevertheless the state-plan states, in general, seem to be onboard and are conducting these targeted inspections along with their Federal counterparts.

Chemical Reaction Hazards and the Risk of Thermal Runaway – One-Day Training Course

Chemical reactions can be extremely hazardous if they are not thoroughly understood and controlled. When intentional or unintentional reactions get out of control, they can result in fires, explosion, or release of toxic fumes or gases.

The course presents the ‘current best practice’ in the field making use of extensive case studies to illustrate the many of key points in the field. Delegates will participate in workshops emphasizing critical areas of the subject. We will also consider peripheral areas of reactivechemical hazards such as safe powder drying and the ignition of flammable gases and vapors, giving a good background and understanding in the subjects.
